Are you a highly sensitive person that feels depleted being around other people? As an empathic person, you are likely designed to help others. In this process, you could be giving away your energy without being aware of it. When you pick up on other people’s emotions and they are not feeling good, you’ll want to absorb the low energy emotions while giving your high vibe to them. Listen in as I guide you through practical ways to protect your energy, keep your emotional balance, and reclaim your personal power. Let’s dive into how you can stop being an energy sponge and start living in your own peaceful, empowered space.

I’ve always been a deeply empathetic person, and for years, I didn’t realize how much of my energy I was giving away. I used to feel drained after a short conversation. If it was a large crowd, I came home exhausted and hungry, needing to replenish my energy. I noticed this especially when I was around certain people — without knowing it, I would give up my good energy and absorb their negative vibes. Even worse, any stress or disagreements with my partner practically immobilized me. It wasn’t until I understood what was happening with my energy and how absorbing other people’s vibes led to my depleted condition. I discovered protection techniques to stop this absorption and ways to release the disharmonious frequencies and replenish mine.

1. Let’s talk about Energy Exchange and how it works.

Sensitive, empathetic people often exchange energy with others without even realizing it. Every conversation, emotional interaction, or physical touch can transfer energy between you and the other person. This energy exchange is not intentional but subconscious. For those that take more than they give, you have heard them called “energy vampires.” As sensitive individuals, learning to protect your energy and stop giving it away unconsciously is crucial.

I want to emphasize two things. The first is that energy vampires don’t realize what they’re doing. They just know they feel better around certain people. It’s up to you to know how to protect yourself around them. You can’t control what other people do. You can only control yourself.

The second is that you have full control over who you share energy with and your ability to recover it from those that took it from you. In normal exchanges, like conversations or hugs, you still should recover your energy. Here’s a story that illustrates why:

One of the graduates from my program worked in sales and was on the phone all day with clients. When she came home at night, she was so exhausted, she would drop on the couch unable to do much. I gave her this simple tip after hanging up the phone with a prospect to collect her energy back and disconnect with them. She raved about how much better she felt afterward. Instead of flopping down on the couch after work, she participated in activities and family gatherings that she had no energy to do before.

There’s a scientific explanation from you feeling worse when you admix your energy with other people’s. Let’s just imagine your energy as a single clean sine wave. When another wave of a different frequency encounters your wave, it’s a different wave entirely. You can visualize this by looking at the voice frequency trace in a video or audio recording program. If you were to separate all the waves, they would look clean. Combined, they are pretty messy. That’s what’s going on inside your body. Instead of a nice clean frequency, you have a jumble. It weakens you, makes you tired, and even out of sorts.

2. How to recall your energy from others and clean up other people’s energy out of you:

This is a practice I use after every conversation or healing session to keep my energy clean and me feeling good. It has allowed me to do healing sessions up to 8 hours a day without getting depleted. Energy healing, as is coaching or any other helping profession, creates a lopsided dependency. This means, giving up your energy in such situations is natural. Checking in with a client energetically makes it easy to absorb their energy if you don’t take the proper precautions.

The first precaution is to send down a grounding cord to earth. This cord will allow any energy that’s not your vibe to drop away. The second is to collect your energy back after your interaction. Then make sure you sever the connection with whatever energy technique you use. I cut cords.

What about all the times before this that you interacted with people either individually or in groups? You can still retrieve all your energy back from everywhere you left it. You can use whatever technique that works for you. It’s similar to a soul retrieval in Shamanism. You can also send back to the original owner any accumulated energy from others at the same time. You can use roses or any method you like that works for you. You have to make sure that your recovered energy is clean of anyone else’s energy. There are several simple methods to do this.

After this process, you will feel lighter, and more energetic with better focus and creativity. Keeping your energy clean of other people’s with simple daily maintenance processes.

3. Simple maintenance steps to keep your energy clean

Here are some simple steps to help keep your energy clear of other people’s energy. The first is to protect your energy field when you are in crowds. Most empathic and helpful people have open energy fields or auras. Often they’re expanded beyond their normal size, which is about your arm span. The first thing to do when you are in crowds is to pull yourself into about 18 inches around your body to keep you from mixing with other people’s fields so easily. You can also fill in the gaps and holes. Make sure you relax it when you leave.

The second is to pull your energy back to you after every conversation or interaction, whether you are in a crowd or not, as I just described.

And the last is to sever the energetic connection between you and others. This can be easily managed with cord cutting or pulling out any cords or hooks you find in your energy. This stops the energy exchange quickly. You’ll know you need to do these steps when you feel exhausted after a conversation or social event, or start having unpleasant or disturbing thoughts you don’t normally have. By cutting your cords, you put a stop to this before it can take hold.

Another client, Amber, was caring for her elderly mother with dementia, and she was emotionally exhausted. After learning these techniques, she was able to set energetic boundaries with her mom and not get so emotionally attached to everything her mom said to her. When that happened, her creativity and clarity improved so much that she was able to propose new business ideas to her colleagues and increase her income by over 100%.
