Welcome to Physics Powered Healing, where we bridge the gap between science and spirituality, transforming skepticism into belief. If you’ve ever felt misunderstood or undervalued for your healing gifts, this is the place for you. Unlike most healing podcasts out there, we believe integrating quantum physics with energy healing is essential to achieving profound and long-lasting transformation in your healing practice. Join me, Dr. Anastasia Chopelas, a physicist turned energy healer, to explore the scientific underpinnings of energy healing and make the mystical measurable.

Welcome back. I know you’ve heard of grounding. It is often mixed up with centering, which I’ll explain in a moment. But, here’s how being ungrounded affected me and how it can affect you. A few years back, I was juggling multiple responsibilities during a difficult marriage and felt perpetually overwhelmed and worried. I had become very ill and spent more time sick and in bed than upright. While I was being treated by a naturopathic physician in Germany, she suggested that I take my shoes off outside on my lawn daily and imagine the connection from me to the Earth accepting my stress, anxiety, and worry. I went home immediately to try this; I felt my mood lift and my stress release almost instantly. This simple yet powerful practice became integrated into my daily routine, but with an added twist that helped amplify the result, which I’ll describe later. This has helped me maintain mental and emotional balance and well-being even during my busiest times.

What is grounding and how is it different from centering?

Here’s the key difference: Grounding is the process of connecting your energy to the Earth’s energy. It helps release excess or stagnant energy from your body into the ground. The goal is to feel stable, present, and rooted in the here and now.

On the other hand, centering is the practice of bringing your energy back into your body, aligned and balanced. You connect with your inner self to create a congruent life with your essence. It also animates your entire body from head to toe.

The science behind grounding

Let’s take a deeper dive into grounding, also known as earthing. It usually involves making direct physical contact with the Earth’s surface. This can be as simple as walking barefoot on grass, sitting, or lying on natural ground.

Scientifically, grounding is believed to transfer electrons from the Earth into our bodies. These electrons act as natural antioxidants that help neutralize free radicals. These are the bad guys. This connection with the Earth can stabilize our internal bioelectrical environment and promote optimal health.

You can imagine it like plugging ourselves into the Earth’s energy grid. When we make this connection, we can feel more stable and present, which is especially important for us as energy healers, highly sensitive people, and empaths, who often absorb a variety of energies from those we come into contact with.

Research on the effects of grounding

Research indicates that grounding can reduce inflammation, improve sleep, and boost overall health. Studies have shown that grounding can balance the autonomic nervous system and bringing into the parasympathetic state by influencing the body’s electrical activity. The parasympathetic state, if you remember, is the healing state in the body. This in turn enhances our body’s ability to heal by stabilizing the electrical environment of our organs, tissues, and cells.

Think about it this way: grounding helps your body function more effectively. Just like how a well-tuned instrument sounds better, a well-grounded body works better.

Benefits of Releasing Disharmonious Energy with Grounding

Grounding also helps release disharmonious or “negative” energy, really energy that accumulates because of stressful, low-vibe emotions such as anxiety or guilt. This disharmonious energy can also accumulate from electronic devices and environmental pollutants. By grounding, you can improve your mood, increase your energy levels, and reduce stress, thus improving your well-being and outlook.

For healers, empaths, and highly sensitive people, this practice is particularly beneficial. We often absorb the energies of those around us, and grounding ensures that we stay clear of foreign energies that can interfere with our well-being. It’s like taking out the trash; we need to clear out the old, stagnant energy to allow room for harmonious, positive energy.

4 Fast and Easy Grounding Techniques

Here are four practical grounding techniques you can incorporate into your daily life.

  1. One simple method is walking barefoot on grass, sand, or soil. It’s especially effective along a shoreline with water. Spending time in nature, gardening, or using grounding mats indoors are also effective ways to ground yourself.

You can start and/or end your day with a few minutes of direct contact with the Earth to reset your body’s natural rhythms and promote a sense of calm and focus. Even if you live in a city, finding a small patch of grass or a local park can make a big difference.

You can also imagine the Earth’s energy coming up through the energy openings in the arches of your feet and traveling up through your meridians to clean out more of that; ow vibe energy. Cycle it up through your head and back out your feet.

2. If this isn’t practical or you need even more help, there are certain minerals and crystals that aid in grounding. Minerals such as black tourmaline, hematite, and pyrite can ground you. Jewelry or putting a stone of this material in your pocket can help you ground. Use it as a touch talisman when you are stressed.

3. For those moments when you need a quick grounding exercise, try the 5–4–3–2–1 technique to engage your senses and connect with your surroundings. While sitting still, identify five things you can see, four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell, and one thing you can taste. It’s a great way to anchor yourself in the present moment.

4. I’m saving the easiest for last: Lines of energy connect us to each other and to objects, including the Earth and sky. Send a line of energy dropping down along your spine down into the Earth, while visualizing it extending from your root deep into the ground. Imagine these roots going to the center of the Earth, anchoring you firmly. You can also imagine a line of energy from the top of your head, extending upward to the light or spirit which will create a channel to bring in healing light into the top of your head. This will aid in washing out all the disharmonious energy, such as dark thoughts or emotions, and replace it with healing and harmonious energy of light thoughts and high-vibe emotions such as joy, happiness, and love. You can help it along by moving into gratitude for all the great things you have, which helps move your mind off whatever is stressing you at the moment. Ready to try it?

What else can you do to help you get grounded?

Remember, all the usual health tips that you hear everywhere, like getting more sleep, drinking plenty of purified or spring water, eating healthier foods, meditation, exercising, and avoiding recreational drugs and caffeine go a long way to promoting a healthy mind and body. Certain herbs and supplements such as chamomile, adaptogens, vitamin D, and omega-3s can be also very helpful for stress and anxiety. But what if you’re doing all this and you still feel pulled in different directions and overwhelmed with life?

It would be irresponsible of me to not mention that clinical anxiety and depression are more serious and likely need more intervention, such as therapy, medication, and other professional support. My personal philosophy is not either holistic healing or traditional medicine but is holistic healing AND traditional medicine.

Summary of grounding and your next steps

Now you’ve heard about grounding, you can see it is a significantly different practice than centering and produces different results. Both practices work together beautifully.

Let’s do some grounding together

In conclusion, grounding is a powerful practice that can help you stay balanced, energized, and healthy, and it’s actually pretty simple. By making direct contact with the Earth, you can release disharmonious energy, improve your physical well-being, and maintain your emotional stability. Whether it’s walking barefoot, spending time in nature, or using a visualization technique, grounding is an accessible and effective tool.
